Career Clusters, as standardized by the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technology (NWCET), are categorizations of job titles (from a full scope of work levels) and their corresponding skill sets which constitute today's Information Technology field. NWCET's eight career clusters are the foundation for knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully support Information Technology's dynamic role in education and the global marketplace.

Although the individual career cluster isolates components specific to its individual identifier, there are common requirements that are necessary elements for all clusters:

Project and task management skills
Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities
Research, development, implementation, and documentation competency
Common software applications usability
Internet terminology knowledge
Understanding of hardware, infrastructure, and network basics
Data security awareness
